Anadarko / Caddo County, Oklahoma

West of Chickasha the wind changes things

Anadarko sits eighteen miles west of us, on the south bank of the Washita River, where US-62 and US-281 cross. Those eighteen miles matter more than they sound like they should. Head west out of Chickasha and you move into a drier, windier stretch of the state, and the dust that comes with it is grittier.

Wind-driven grit is abrasive. It is what puts the fine scratching into paint out here, and it packs into door seals, window channels and the trim gaps, where it keeps working every time a door shuts. That is a completely different cause from the swirls a commuter picks up in a tunnel wash, and it needs a different order of operations: get the grit out of the seals first, then correct the paint. Do it the other way around and you are just grinding it in.

The river bottom is why the cabin smells

Sitting on the Washita's south bank means Anadarko air carries more moisture than the towns east of it. In a vehicle that gets driven every day you never notice. In one that sits, that moisture works down into the carpet padding, the seat foam and the headliner, and a few weeks later there is a musty smell nobody can find the source of.

Masking it does not work, because the smell is not on the surface. It has to come back out of the material, which means extraction and properly drying the padding. Treating the surface only makes sense once that is done.

FAQ

Anadarko questions, answered.

Do you come out to Anadarko?

Yes. Anadarko is eighteen miles west of the shop on US-62, so it is a come-to-you town and we plan the day around getting out there properly.

Something smells musty and I cannot find it. Can you fix that?

Usually. Around the river bottom the moisture gets down into the carpet padding and the seat foam, which is why air fresheners never work on it. It has to be pulled back out of the material with extraction and then properly dried, and only then does treating the surface make any sense.

There are fine scratches all over the paint and I never take it through a car wash. Why?

Out west of Chickasha the wind carries a grittier dust, and it collects in the seals and the trim gaps. Every time you wipe the vehicle down, or a door shuts, that grit moves across the paint. Getting it out of the seals is the first step, before anybody polishes anything.

Anadarko is eighteen miles west of the shop on US-62, so this is a come-to-you town.
